Upon receiving the pilot’s signal “enemy to the north east”, they quickly engaged, sinking 2 ships and damaging 2. One of the first Allied successes against the Japanese in WWII. One of the superb series of prints entitled Air War Profiles, this one shows the P47 Thunderbolt as flown by Polish pilot Major Boleslaw 'Mike' Gladych DFC & Silver Star. 'Mike' joined 303 Sqn in 1942, scoring 18 aerial victories. Joined 302 later, but famously then 'loaned' himself to the 56th Fighter Group USAF under Francis Gabreski, hence the USAF markings. Quite a hard print to find these days, 'Victory Over Gold' depicts the morning of June 7, 1944. 12 JU88s appear over Gold Beach, ready to attack the heavily populated beachhead. The Spitfires of 401 Squadron head in to the pack.In the ensuing dogfight the Canadian pilots destroyed six of the JU88s, and the attack on the beach was averted. Showing the Mk.IXb Spitfires of 412 Squadron RCAF, one of the 55 Spitfire squadrons that took part in D-Day air operations between 5 and 7 June 1944. Tasked with providing cover, Anthony depicts the squadron on a final sweep to encompass the scene over Utah beach where men and armour from the U.S. VII Corps continue to pour ashore.
